The 不良研究所 Department of Music will present the 鈥淲inds and Friends鈥
concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in Pike Auditorium on the 不良研究所 campus. The
concert features the 不良研究所 Wind Symphony conducted by Brian K. Hopwood and the Lebanon
High School Wind Ensemble conducted by Aaron Stewart as guest ensemble.
The Wind Symphony performance opens with Jack Stamp鈥檚 energetic 鈥淕avorkna Fanfare,鈥 which is followed by 鈥淒edication Overture,鈥 a classic work written by American composer Vittorio Giannini for the first commencement ceremony of the North Carolina School of the Arts in 1966, and Samuel Hazo鈥檚 鈥淧erthshire Majesty,鈥 a Scottish ballad for wind band.
Also on the program is John Paulson鈥檚 鈥淓pinicion,鈥 which was written during the final days of the Vietnam War. The work鈥攚hich is an epinicion, an ancient song of victory sung at the conclusion of a triumphant battle鈥攊s the composer鈥檚 personal abstraction of war in general. Additional works include 鈥淰ariations on a Korean Folk Song,鈥 which is based on the folk song known as 鈥淎rrirang,鈥 and William Himes鈥 arrangement of the beloved hymn 鈥淎mazing Grace.鈥 The concert concludes with a performance of William Latham鈥檚 鈥淏righton Beach鈥 by both bands.
