The 不良研究所 Department of Music will present 鈥淎 Potpourri of Wind Music鈥 at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature works by Anthony O鈥橳oole, Charles Ives, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Julie Giroux and Paul Hindemith performed by the Wind Symphony and compositions performed by Chamber ensembles 鈥 woodwind, brass and percussion.
The Wind Symphony music for this performance depicts a variety of styles and soloists. O鈥橳oole鈥檚 鈥淔anfare to 鈥楾he Hammer鈥欌 was written as a tribute to, and is based on the career of, baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron, a personal hero of the composer. Short solos by senior music education major Miranda Applegate on clarinet, and freshman music and biology major Emma Hale on flute are included.
Renaissance composer Sweelinck wrote 鈥淏allo del Granduca鈥 (the Grand Duke鈥檚 Ballet) for harpsichord or organ. The work is brilliantly transcribed for wind band by Michael Walters and includes the main theme and four variation settings of the Italian dance tune. 鈥淥ne Life Beautiful,鈥 a slow lyrical work by Giroux, includes a variety of short solos by Emma Hale, flute; Kathryn Jespersen, oboe; Dylan Pich, alto saxophone; Nate Murfin, trumpet; Ashley Fox, French horn; Austin Bryant, trombone; Daniel Lewis, euphonium and Tiffany Johnson, vibraphone.
鈥淰ariations on 鈥楢merica鈥欌 by Ives and Hindemith鈥檚 monumental 鈥淢arch鈥 from 鈥淪ymphonic Metamorphosis鈥 round out the program.
